Talk:IETF 120 Vancouver
IETF First contact
Hi There! Just got off the Zoom with Greg Wood, the Director of Communications and Operations for the IETF Administration LLC, the small org behind the scenes for the IETF. We talked about IETF120, the patterns IETF weeks usually take, and some potential opportunities for coordination with `localhost`
Here are some quick bullet points for you:
- generally IETFs are part of an ongoing going conversation, they are an opportunity for high bandwidth working in person together. They follow a pattern, so that is why there is not a lot of coordination activity on the mailing lists until just a few weeks out
- probably will be about 1000+ people (plus 1000 online) for the week
- they will have a social on the Sunday night at the Hyatt
- Wed evening is traditionally when they do the Plenary Session, which will go to about 7
- anyone can join the hackathon. Just post to the wiki using the template (in other words, it does not have to be related to an existing IETF standard)
- last time they had a cap of 400 people for the hackathon
Greg said they are very interested in helping people who are interested in doing work with the IETF get onboarded, to help them understand how to interface. The opaqueness of the org is one of the challenges they deal with. Furthermore, they are interested in just communicating what the IETF is and does.
So, we talked about 2 ideas off the bat:
- If we do a social at The Permanent on the Thu, Greg thinks we can get an Area Director or someone to come out and talk about the IETF to the crowd
- Internally they have discussed doing a general webinar. Greg thinks this could be a good trial opportunity. Maybe do an online webinar in June, tailored to the Vancouver community, maybe even describing what the hackathon is like, to get people fired up. We can share our input as to what we would like to see in a webinar. What do you think?
Greg is very open to other ideas about how we can make the IETF less opaque. He is going to share some mailers with me for sharing around. He didn't realize that there are so many universities in Vancouver… what other communities could we share with for outreach? Looking for your ideas here.
