Federated micro blogging server written in Ruby that supports ActivityPub

Mastodon is a free, open-source social network server based on ActivityPub where users can follow friends and discover new ones. On Mastodon, users can publish anything they want: links, pictures, text, and video. All Mastodon servers are interoperable as a federated network (users on one server can seamlessly communicate with users from another one, including non-Mastodon software that implements ActivityPub!)

Mastodon gGmbH

Mastodon gGmbH is a non-profit from Germany that develops the Mastodon software. Mastodon started in 2016 as an open-source project by Eugen Rochko, who, as an avid user since 2008, was dissatisfied with the state and direction of Twitter. https://joinmastodon.org/about

Getting Started

The Mastodon’s Guide to the Fediverse

If you are here, you might have heard of Mastodon due to the recent migration from Twitter. I will not get into this topic at the moment because I could very likely write a whole book about it without even noticing. There is so much to say. The past few months on Mastodon have been quite astonishing!

But for now I will keep to the task of guiding you through the steps to join Mastodon and have a great experience on the Fediverse. I hope this guide will help making your Mastodon exploration easier and more pleasant, and that you will soon understand why I am so enthusiastic about Mastodon myself.

You can consider each step of this guide like a little article in itself, and you could only complete one step per day or per week for example. Follow this guide at your own pace. You only need to read Step 1 and Step 2 to create your account and start. The rest is complementary to improve your experience and knowledge of Mastodon and the Fediverse. Let’s start!
